Trusting God

II Samuel 22:2-3 “...The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: He is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour;...”

Trust. What a simple, small word… but what does it mean? Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines trust as:

Confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or other sound principle of another person.

This begs the question- in whom or what do you trust? How easy is it, when things go awry, for us to call a friend, our companion, our mom or dad? In our age of quick and easy communication, it’s easy to take God for granted, only running to him when we’ve exhausted our other resources. 

James 4:8 “Draw night to God and he will draw night to you.”

God is just waiting for us to come to him. He wants to prove himself strong on our behalf… but we have to trust him. Take trust from a noun… to a verb. Put it to action! 

But how do you take trust from a noun to a verb? 

By exercising that spiritual muscle. It’s one baby step at a time. In a mental struggle that you’re unworthy of such love from someone? Trust God through his scripture, he tells us how much he loves us. In a financial deficit? Trust God, give him time to work it out or show you what to do differently. Not sure what next right step to take? Trust him to make your path plain and straight by seeking him and waiting on him (Because God’s time is NOT our time)!

The Puritan Preacher Thomas Lye said: 

“The Lord Jehovah should be the sole object of a believer’s trust. In stormy and tempestuous seas we must come to this rock for a refuge.” (Voice’s From the Past: Puritan Devotional Readings)

Do we take the time to understand what an awesome God we serve? It’s the same God who parted the waters for the Israelites… the same God who sent an angel to open prison doors for Peter and John… the same God who spared Paul’s life after a venomous snake bit him because God had a better plan! That’s the God we serve!

Man will fail or disappoint us. Not intentionally, but that’s just… life. They may forget, or not carry the burden like we’d like. But God sees all, he knows all, and he wants the best for us- period. We serve the same God that we read about- won’t you trust him?
